Obituary

Robert Harold "Appy" Apotosh, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born in Buffalo NY on March 5, 1928, to Anton and Edna (Breneman) Apotosh, Bob spent his teenage years in Celoron NY. It was there, while roller skating at Celoron Park, that he met the love of his life, Lois Butts. They married on April 15, 1950, settled in Ashville NY and shared a beautiful life until her passing November 18, 2011.

A 1946 graduate of Celoron High School, Bob was a long-time employee of Westburgh Electric, where he began working in his late teens and remained until his retirement. He was recently honored with a 75-year membership award from the IBEW union.

If you knew "Appy" you knew his passion for cars. Whether it was his '56 Chevy or his Porsche 914, Bob owned a revolving door of automotive history - you name it, he probably owned one. He was a founding member of the Auto Sports Club, a longtime member of the Sports Car Club of America, the Porsche Club, and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. He also was an active member of the Chautauqua Lake Region of the Antique Automotive Club of America and served as president.

Racing was a family legacy. His early days were spent in dirt track racing, and he went on to win a New York State Autocrossing Championship in his Austin-Healey Sprite. He spent many weekends with friends and family watching sports car racing - at the Stone Bridge, or at his favorite track Nelson Ledges. Bob he spent countless hours as pit crew for his friends. He beamed with pride watching his daughter Julie, his son-in-law Paul and his grandsons Christopher and Gregory carry on the family tradition of autocrossing, and he helped inspire their love of cars. There were very few weekends that you didn't see Bob and Lois supporting the family at the event site - you just couldn't keep them away.

When he wasn't behind the wheel of one of his cars, Appy was surrounded by the sounds of jazz. He was a devoted fan of big band legends especially Stan Kenton, he often travelled to watch his favorite local talents, or maybe you could have found him having a private jazz session with friends on the Hi-Fi at Cheney Road.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother LeRoy Apotosh, his sister Loretta Nalbone, and his wife Lois.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Paul) Shaver of Holley NY, his grandsons Christopher Shaver of Chili NY, and Gregory Shaver and Lindsey Sawicki of Brockport NY, his four grand-dogs, and three grand-kittens.

In honor of Bob, the family asks that you skip the flowers. Instead, please make a donation to your favorite charity.

Lift a glass of your favorite beverage, crank up some jazz, and cherish time with your loved ones.

Friends and family will be received from 1:00 - 3:00pm on Friday April 10th, 2026, in the Lind Funeral Home, Jamestown, NY. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
